Kara Technologies brings sign language into the digital age. Their hyper-realistic digital humans translate content into visual sign language, making communication accessible anywhere, anytime, for the Deaf community.

Why we invested

Kara Technologies is making sign language available at scale, enabling millions of Deaf people to access content many of us take for granted: emergency broadcasts, children’s books, education, public services and more. If it’s not in sign language it’s not fully accessible for the Deaf community.

And yes, that’s about accessibility - but it goes deeper.

Kara’s work is about shifting the burden. Instead of placing the onus on the Deaf community to adapt, Kara gives businesses, governments, and society the tools to be inclusive by default. That’s not just accessibility - it’s equity.

From day one, Kara built with, and not just for, the Deaf community. Their co-design process wasn’t just about inclusion; it became a source of strength, shaping a product that reflects lived experience and builds trust. That authenticity is now a competitive edge, enabling real-world use cases that others couldn’t reach.

Their early traction in emergency communication proved the power of the technology and helped the company to test community engagement across different countries and markets. But Kara’s ambition doesn’t stop there. The vision is bold and urgent: any content, anywhere, available in sign language in real time.

Measuring What Matters

Impact Summary
Problem
Participation in society is inherently difficult for the Deaf community - a Deaf person’s first language is Sign Language. Existing solutions to address barriers (closed captions, SL interpreters) are either not a Sign Language solution (closed captions) or not scalable (interpreters), making everyday services inaccessible to the Deaf community.
What
Kara’s Auto Translate enables sign language to be available anywhere, at any time that digital content is available (e.g. education, media, and public-information channels). Kara’s product is designed with/by the Deaf community.
Who
Kara digital human translates content and information for end users that are Deaf.
How Much
Scale: number of users multiplied by the deployment contexts of the Kara technology i.e. a single user will be served by Kara via their streaming platform, their internet banking provider, via public announcements, and so on.
Depth: subjective experience of the Deaf community in their ability to equitably participate in society.
Duration: ranges from single instances of improved access to a service for individuals through to long-term improved life outcomes from greater access to education, information and content.
Contribution
Other Sign Language avatars and digital translation services have yet to achieve the same level of realism, accuracy and immediacy required for accurate translation, nor are they as rapidly scalable. If successful, Kara’s Auto Translate solution will be the first SaaS-enabled translation tool for governments, agencies and companies to easily integrate into their communication and content delivery channels.
Impact Risk
Evidence risk: As a platform plug-in, Kara may be unable to quantify how many Deaf end-users use or are exposed to their digital humans. Kara is similarly unable to measure the degree of change experienced by those end users (scale x depth).
Impact Measures
To be defined based on implementation; currently Kara is exploring methods to gather both quantitative and qualitative insights as the platform is deployed in varied real-world contexts.

Making sign language available everywhere, at any time for the Deaf community.
