Why We Invested
Hundreds of thousands of tonnes of plastic enter Aotearoa's landfills each year. Critical looks at that number and sees misallocated resource.
Their circular materials system transforms waste plastic into Cleanstone: durable, locally-made panels for construction and design that perform as well as traditional materials, at a fraction of the environmental cost. But Critical's kaupapa goes further than diversion. They're asking businesses to stop treating plastic as something to dispose of and start treating it as something to steward. That reframe is the work.
What sharpened our conviction was the integrity of the design. Critical holds that sustainability and good design aren't in tension. Their products are beautiful, functional, and durable because they have to be: a circular material no one wants to specify doesn't close any loops. Every Cleanstone panel is an argument, made in form and function, that the circular economy doesn't ask you to compromise.
The whakapapa runs through all of it. Honouring Papatūānuku is the reason the business exists and the standard against which every product decision gets made.
Measuring What Matters
Problem:
Aotearoa faces a growing plastic waste crisis. Hundreds of thousands of tonnes end up in landfill each year, while construction continues to rely on carbon-intensive, often toxic, non-recyclable materials.
What:
Plastic waste diverted from landfill and transformed into Cleanstone panels and other durable, locally-made circular products.
Who:
Businesses taking responsibility for their plastic waste by supplying it to Critical for production, and architects and designers making environmentally conscious material choices for their clients.
How Much:
Scale: volume of plastic diverted from landfill and number of projects or businesses that have specified Cleanstone.
Depth: clients making ongoing design choices to adopt circular materials across successive projects.
Duration: continuous recycling of Cleanstone panels back into new panels as a genuinely circular building material.
Contribution:
Without Critical, the plastic they divert has no realistic destination other than landfill. The building materials it replaces would otherwise be high-carbon, often toxic, and non-recyclable.
Impact Risk:
Endurance / Drop-off risk: If panels aren't returned to Critical to be recycled into new panels, they are likely to end up in landfill, facing the same fate as they would have if they weren't made into Cleanstone.
